Position Summary

Waterkeeper Alliance seeks a Campaign Manager to lead a high impact campaign to advance equitable solutions to protect communities, waterways, and marine ecosystems from the severe impacts of climate change, fossil fuels, and other dirty energy sources. The Climate and Safe Energy (CSE) campaign achieves its goals by mobilizing and building the capacity of the global Waterkeeper movement. Together, we advocate for strong international agreements and national policies to address climate change, combat water pollution, and advance environmental justice.

The Campaign Manager reports to the Advocacy Director and will be primarily responsible for managing Waterkeeper Alliance’s global Climate and Safe Energy campaign.  The Campaign Manager will work with other staff, Waterkeeper groups, community leaders, public officials, coalitions, and volunteers at the national and global level to build public support for a just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy while promoting sustainable development and renewable energy alternatives and blocking false solutions like hydropower dams.


Primary Responsibilities

Campaign Management

  • Manage all aspects of the Climate and Safe Energy campaign and insure the implementation of a cohesive, integrated campaign in collaboration with Waterkeeper Alliance’s staff;
  • Develop and implement campaign advocacy strategies and mobilize community advocates in key prioritized areas;
  • Update Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates of advocacy opportunities and relevant policy developments in the U.S. and globally;
  • Develop and implement a plan for engagement with Waterkeeper groups to advance the Climate and Safe Energy campaign’s goals;
  • Build advocacy capacity of Waterkeeper groups and increase engagement in the Climate and Safe Energy campaign;
  • Export lessons learned to Waterkeeper groups across the globe facing similar threats;
  • Support the development of campaign e-mails, action alerts, website content, blogs, social media posts, letters to the editor and other opinion pieces, and videos;
  • Support the Climate and Safe Energy Campaign’s fundraising goals;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with climate justice partners and allies;
  • Represent Waterkeeper Alliance externally, including in coalitions, meetings and conferences, among others;
  • Monitor and leverage citizen science, research, and data to advance the Climate and Safe Energy’s campaign goals; and
  • Perform other campaign projects and administrative duties.

Policy Advocacy

  • Monitor and brief internal and external stakeholders on all global climate policy developments relating to the Climate and Safe Energy Campaign policy priorities, including United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations; regional, multilateral, and bilateral climate agreements and discussions; and significant national climate policy developments in key countries where  Waterkeeper Alliance and its member groups and affiliates work;
  • Track United States federal legislation, regulations, and other policies related to the Climate and Safe Energy Campaign priorities, and identify opportunities for advocacy engagement and policy reform;
  • Advance climate justice policies to help correct decades of environmental damage inflicted upon the health and well-being of low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous communities;
  • Develop policy recommendations, advocacy resources, toolkits and other advocacy materials and resources for a diverse range of audiences including Waterkeeper groups, policymakers, the media, and general public;
  • Educate decision-makers and the general public about climate justice and its intersection with water quality and quantity issues;
  • Interpret complex scientific and policy information for consumption by target audiences; and
  • Execute additional projects, as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

The position requires a broad skill set and the successful candidate must be driven by a strong desire for justice. The ideal Climate and Safe Energy Campaign Manager will have some or all of the following qualifications:

  • A firm belief that everyone has a right to clean water;
  • Five or more years of relevant experience working on national, regional and/or global policy advocacy campaigns
  • Climate justice, environmental, or water protection policy, and/or UN experience a plus;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with, and being guided by, impacted communities and incorporating principles of equity, inclusion, and justice into campaign processes, objectives, and outcomes;
  • Significant experience in the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns and strategic initiatives;
  • Experience should include at least some of the following activities: campaign planning, policy advocacy strategy development and implementation, project management, community organizing, lobbying, or public policy development;
  • A demonstrated ability to interact effectively with lawmakers and other policymakers;
  • Familiarity with, or the ability to readily adapt to, the Waterkeeper culture and model;
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
  • The ability to work well independently; and
  • A team-player with a sense of humor

Salary & Benefits

$73,000-85,000 annually. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer.
