About the Position

TreePeople is looking for a dynamic, entrepreneurial-minded CFO. This position is ideal for a problem solver with the desire to help underserved communities address pressing challenges caused by climate change and environmental injustice. The CFO will direct all financial aspects of the organization, ensure financial stability, determine financial best practices, and create strategic plans to progress the overall financial health of the organization.

The ideal candidate is a results-driven entrepreneur with impeccable integrity and a strong sense of urgency, boasting a successful track record in mid to large-sized non-profit organizations. They excel in building robust financial systems, leveraging key performance indicators, and connecting organizational processes. With decisive leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to drive change, the CFO oversees all finance and accounting functions, aligning overall strategy with TreePeople’s values and goals, ultimately inspiring confidence and trust within the team.

Responsibilities

Senior Leadership & Organizational Management

  • Drive the organization’s financial vision to achieve financial stability, sustainability, and growth.
  • Lead and manage the finance team and provide a working environment that ensures professional development for staff.
  • Coordinate annual audits to ensure timely completion of audit financial statements and present results to the Board finance committee and Board of Directors.
  • Represent the Finance team at Board meetings.
  • Collaborate with leadership in strategic analysis and business operations decisions.

Financial Management and Strategy

  • Oversee cash flow planning, budgets, financial forecasting, and cash flow for administration of existing programs and proposed new programs.
  • Develop and monitor the annual operating budget in coordination with the leadership team.
  • Provide financial forecasting for current and future programs.
  • Analyze and evaluate the financial impact of new opportunities and partnerships.
  • Monitor the cash position of the organization, and review and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Track funding sources and prepare monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Develop long- and short-term financial plans that complement organizational objectives.

Resource Allocation and Compliance

  • Compare projections to actual figures and budgeted expenses to actual expenses; make or oversee any necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets and report any variances.
  • Coordinate with tax accountant to prepare the IRS 990 and ensure timely filing.
  • Ensure efficient accounting policies, procedures, and processes are in place to maintain proper accounting records. Confirm adequate accounting controls are in place and adhered to conduct periodic cyclical audits.
  • Work with Finance Committee to oversee all investments.
  • Responsible for fixed assets management and depreciation calculations.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of the general ledger, integrity of financial data, and ensuring financial operations are in accordance with GAAP, local, federal, and state laws and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of ten (10) years experience in accounting or finance in the nonprofit sector for organizations with revenue $10 million and above with at least five (5) years of senior leadership.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a job-related field is required.
  • CPA and/or advanced degree is preferred.
  • Broad-based knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, processes, and practices, including financial management, audit, budget, compliance, tax return preparation and submission, legal and regulatory.
  • Experience in or knowledge of local, state and federal contracts required.
  • Experience planning and executing organization budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically to strengthen department infrastructure, practices, and processes.
  • Remain up to date on legislative changes impacting the financial practices of the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including efficient handling of deadlines, ability to respond gracefully to quick-turnaround, and produce high-quality results with attention to detail.
  • Exceptional hands-on leadership and management skills.
  • Comfortable presenting information in a compelling, informative, and culturally relevant manner to staff and board members.
  • Advanced experience with programs including Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite.

Salary & Benefits

The salary range is $150K - $180K. This is a full time position located in Los Angeles, CA.  Benefits for full time employees include health, dental, vision and life  insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, employee assistance program, flexible spending account,  paid time off (vacation, sick and holidays) and more.
