This position is a new role at the organization. The Director of Procurement will develop a new procurement function from the ground up to support streamlined business processes, sustainable growth, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.  The Director is responsible for indirect procurement, developing and implementing long-term strategies for Earthjustice purchasing of goods and services, strategic sourcing, effective contracting, data analysis, and spend analytics.

The Director will develop procurement policies and procedures that will add value, efficiency, and innovation to the organization.  They will set purchasing policies, manage purchasing budgets and have overall management of purchasing processes.  The procurement function will work to support Earthjustice’s sustainability goals and incorporate vendor diversity and sustainability practices into our procurement processes.

The Director of Procurement will report to the Associate Vice President of Financial Planning in the Finance Department and will eventually hire and lead all team to manage procurement processes for the organization.

Responsibilities

Procurement Strategy, Policy & Management: 80%

  • Develop and communicate a centralized procurement strategic plan; establish, communicate, and implement long-term goals to promote effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Create, develop, and maintain procurement policies, procedures, and guidelines, focusing on cost savings, efficiency, compliance, risk management, ease of use, and staff experience.
  • Meet regularly with stakeholder departments regarding procurement for their understanding and to drive continued process improvement.
  • Serve as the primary contact for procurement-related questions, training, policy and procedure interpretation, and alignment by all departments.
  • Develop and implement procurement-related training programs for the organization and local office procurement partners.
  • Establish requirements and a standard process for competitive bidding for contracted services.
  • Partner and collaborate with Legal, Workplace Experience and Strategies, Ops Partners, IT and Finance on contract development and administration.
  • Standardize and streamline the purchase of common goods, in particular IT equipment, office equipment and office supplies, with sustainable products and processes in mind.
  • Maintain vendor relationships, set standards for vendor selection, contract processing and competitive bidding, monitor performance of suppliers.
  • Review vendor quality and maintain price controls and inventory flows to identify and implement efficient purchasing programs.
  • Partner with the DEI and Sustainability teams to ensure that procurement practices align with our organizational mission and values; including building mechanisms to evaluate our vast array of vendor partnerships and ensuring purchasing meets organizational sustainability practices and goals.
  • Develop inventory management process and procedures for organizational assets.
  • Manage travel program, including building and maintaining vendor relationships, preferred rates and access to the travel agent.

Research and Metrics: 20%

  • Track and analyze data to monitor procurement performance, identify areas for improvement and drive financial decision-making.
  • Develop and communicate decision-making tools for purchases made by others.
  • Provide periodic reports, analyses and key performance indicators (KPIs) to AVP Financial Planning, VP of Finance and the Operations leadership team.
  • Prepare Board-related talking points and presentations.

*Supervisory responsibilities: None currently, with potential to grow the team over time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, finance, logistics or similar relevant fields.
  • 7 years + of related experience required, with at least 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit procurement practices preferred.
  • A results-oriented, metrics-driven leader with expertise in purchasing, supplier collaboration, development, and compliance.
  • Requires demonstrated command of the following systems: Excel, Outlook, Concur, Teams, Zoom, PowerPoint.
  • Extensive knowledge of strategic sourcing, vendor management, contracting, supplier risk management, and supplier relationship management.
  • Strong ability to aggregate spend in a highly decentralized environment.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic planning processes, benchmarking, and organizational performance measures to drive improvement.
  • Communicates effectively cross-functionally, with the ability to articulate analysis, options, and conclusions orally and in writing for diverse audiences.
  • Proven expertise in implementing and managing change across all levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional negotiator and proven experience in establishing and maintaining professional relationships, including success in networking and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Outstanding team building and leadership skills; strong interpersonal skills; enthusiasm for engaging with diverse environments.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Contributes to recruiting, hiring, developing and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Salary is dependent on experience and location.

San Francisco, CA or New York, NY: $180,000 – $200,000
Seattle, WA, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Honolulu, HI: $171,000 – $190,000
Denver, CO, Philadelphia, PA, Anchorage, AK, Juneau, AK: $162,000 – $180,000
Miami & Tallahassee, FL, New Orleans, LA, Bozeman, MT: $153,000 – $170,000

Other remote locations salary ranges may vary: $153,000 – $190,000

Location

This position can be fully remote within the U.S. or based out of our NY, DC, or SF offices.
