Ocean Visions is a nonprofit organization that catalyzes innovation at the intersection of the ocean and climate crises. We facilitate multisector collaborations from within our network and beyond, working with leading research institutions, the private sector, and public-interest organizations to fully explore and advance responsible and effective ocean-based climate solutions. In short, we work to stabilize the climate and restore ocean health.
Unprecedented levels of greenhouse gas pollution in the biosphere are disrupting the climate and driving changes in our ocean – overheating and acidification – which are devastating marine life and diminishing the ocean’s ability to support humanity. Ocean Visions works on a four-part strategy to directly address the causes and impacts of climate disruption:
We are looking for a talented, energetic, and collaborative individual to help build our program and body of work on the first pillar – Reduce. The Reduce program is focused on ocean-based solution pathways that decrease overall societal carbon emissions. Decreases can come from new technologies that significantly reduce the amount of carbon emitted for a given product or service, or the replacement of existing products and services with low carbon alternatives. Decarbonization solutions will span a wide variety of sectors and implementation of these solutions is inherently multidisciplinary.
We are in a race against time to arrest dangerous climate change and begin to reverse it. That requires dramatic reductions in overall emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and the ocean has an important role to play in achieving these reductions of carbon emissions. Major sectors of ocean-based emission reduction include low-carbon energy, low-carbon shipping, low-carbon food and low-carbon bioproducts. There are a large number of opportunities for CO2 reduction/replacement within each of these major categories, yet they have received less attention than terrestrial counterparts to date.
The role of the Reduce program at Ocean Visions is to identify the highest leverage of these opportunities and apply our proven technology road-mapping process to further advance research and development of these opportunities.
Who We Need
We seek a broadly trained individual to lead work on further identifying and assessing these opportunities and engaging relevant players in determining needed agendas to move forward testing and development in the areas most likely to bring societal and environmental benefits. This person must have exceptional analytical and social skills. Experience working in ocean issues and on decarbonization and mitigation is strongly desired.
The ideal candidate will be bold and thoughtful; a critical and creative thinker who can apply rigorous analytical tools to complex problems. This person must possess the ability to synthesize large amounts of information, identify avenues for action that are viable, and bring others along with them. Passion for addressing and solving the climate crisis is essential. Familiarity with the application of technology and innovation to solve complex problems is necessary. Thinking outside of the box that we are in is essential.
This Program Lead will report to the CEO, with a secondary reporting line to the Chief Scientist and will work collaboratively with all Ocean Visions staff.
