Job Summary

The Environmental Justice Program Manager's primary focus is on developing and coordinating Black Women for Wellness’ environmental research projects with local beauty industry businesses and professionals. This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual who is a self-starter and who is committed to working with Black women around environmental health issues and the promotion of the Healthy Hair Initiative.

The impact you’ll make:

  • Familiar with environmental justice issues (oil drilling, climate change, toxic chemical exposures) and how those issues impact Black communities.
  • Research methods and ability to navigate IRB (Institutional Review Board) paperwork and protocol to qualify BWW and staff members.
  • Recruit and guide community advisory board to offer insights and wisdom on BWW research projects.
  • Interact with media, media request for more information on BWW environmental justice work, create media including print, social and website articles.
  • Develop robust intern program, interact with universities and academic institutions to recruit, select and supervise interns.
  • Develop budget, track expenses and income to keep the program on track.
  • Develop and implement community programs on environmental justice topics and issues as they impact BWW and our communities.
  • Create health education and promotional literature that highlights environmental justice topics important to Black communities.

*Essential Functions

Skills and Experience

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, Chemistry or other related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience coordinating programs and providing educational workshops, presentations, and trainings.
  • 2-3 years of experience conducting community-based research within communities of color.
  • 2-3 years of experience conducting both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Must have outstanding oral and written communications skills, experience working with Black communities
  • Ability and interest in working with communities of color regarding toxic chemicals in personal products
  • Proficient with Microsoft office programs including: Word, Excel and PowerPoint, WordPress knowledge is plus
  • Proficient with online media tools including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, WordPress and Tumblr
  • Experience with databases (salesforce, etc. a plus)
  • Ability to relate to Black/African American communities as well as other diverse communities; knowledge of south Los Angeles communities is a plus
  • Has insights into the cultural and traditions of Black community especially those with relationship to research, personal care, hair and historical medical treatment
  • Share Black Women for Wellness values and mission
  • Flexible and responsive to new ideas and situations, and work respectfully with a diverse group
  • Willing to travel throughout California, moderately and light national travel
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required
  • Able to work in a team-based environment, is effective at team building and able to utilize team resources productively and efficiently
  • Values accuracy and attention to detail
  • Possesses a professional appearance and attitude, and strong work ethic
  • Able to walk 30 minutes at a time
  • Should be able to carry up to 25 pounds (health education materials and tabling needs)
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a reliable means of transportation
