About APC

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) was established by seven founding organisations in 1990 as an international membership-based network working to mobilise emerging electronic information and communication networks for social justice and development. APC has grown into a respected network with a total of 73 organisational members. APC’s strength comes from the experience, expertise and credibility of the people who make up the network and the organisational culture of feminist values, commitment to human rights, belief in collaboration and respect and care that APC brings to its relationship within the APC community.

Our vision is for people to use and shape the internet and digital technologies to create a just and sustainable world, leading to greater care for ourselves, each other and the Earth.

Our mission is to create a just and sustainable world by harnessing the collective power of activists, organisations, excluded groups, communities and social movements, to challenge existing power structures and ensure that the internet is developed and governed as a global public good.

Who we are looking for:

  • You have at least four years of demonstrated experience in communications work within the Global South (particularly on the development and implementation of outreach and engagement strategies directed at multiple audiences).
  • You have significant experience in producing content for social media and managing accounts in a variety of platforms.
  • You believe in APC's vision and mission and have worked for organisations or networks with similar goals and values.
  • You have significant understanding and analysis on digital rights issues, with a feminist and human rights-based approach.
  • You are used to working with journalists, developing press releases and responding to media requests.
  • You are creative and an excellent communicator, capable of working with technical and policy issues but also translating them into simple language.
  • You are proficient in English. Also an advantage: proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese and/or French.
  • You are located in Africa or Asia and available for travel.
  • You are proactive, responsive, flexible and able to work to numerous competing deadlines.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team, cross-culturally and across time zones.
  • You have experience working in an online virtual/remote environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Implement, update and maintain the outreach and engagement components in APC's communications strategy.
  • Engage the APC network and expanded community as priority audiences through diverse communication actions, including the production of the bi-weekly Community Updates newsletter.
  • Strengthen APC's social media presence by producing original content in different formats for these channels, and organising online events such as campaigns, interviews and social media guest editor “takeovers”, as required.
  • Engage journalists and media outlets as a key audience: establish ongoing partnerships with identified media outlets; develop and send press releases; produce the bi-weekly media digests.
  • Develop and produce regular outreach reports based on the agreed communications monitoring and evaluation indicators.
  • Attend key events identified by APC, and produce the corresponding outreach plans and coverage outputs as required.

Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a 1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) position. Contract renewal is dependent on performance (there will be a four-month probation period) and the availability of continued funding. Salary will depend on experience, skills and location, and is in the range of approximately USD 41,000 to USD 60,000 annually, plus benefit-like and office allowances. Salary is calculated monthly using the UN post-adjustment factor, depending on the applicant’s country of residence. The specific amount can vary. Short-listed applicants will receive specific information about the salary range.

Location: The applicant can work from anywhere as long as they have reliable connectivity, but priority will be given to applicants located in Africa and Asia. APC provides an equipment allowance and requires staff to use their own computers and office equipment. International and regional travel will be required. APC is a networked organisation with a strong base and orientation towards the Global South; we privilege this political lens and location in our work.

APC is committed to providing equal employment opportunity without regard to ethnicity, colour, religion, sexuality or gender identity, disability or any other protected status with respect to recruitment, hiring, development and training, promotion, and other terms and conditions of employment. APC values people from diverse backgrounds and encourages applications from people from the Global South, working to create an open atmosphere of integrity, trust, honesty and respect.
