How to Make a Mid-Career Pivot Into Social Impact

You know the age-old question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that kids and teens get asked a lot, even most people don’t figure out what they want to be when they grow up until they are literally a grown up.

Youngsters feel so much pressure to choose a career path at an early age and stick to it, only to later realize that they only did it to please other people. We’re getting a little deep for a weekly newsletter, but alls we’re trying to say is that it’s totally normal to get to the middle of your career and realize that you need to make a change.

In her book Becoming, Michelle Obama called it a career pivot, and she pivoted more times than Ross with that couch.

If she can do it, so can you. Here’s how you make a mid-career pivot into the social impact industry:

  • Figure out what you’re passionate about. What do you want to see change in the world?
  • Align your skills with your passion. How can your skills and previous work experience connect you to your mission?
  • Research companies that are doing the work you want to do. The social impact space includes for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Find companies and positions you align with that are doing the work you want to do.
  • Volunteer for the cause. This is the best way to get hands-on learning about social impact and beef up your resume with relevant experience.
  • Learn everything you can about social impact through online courses.
  • Attend networking events and conferences, join LinkedIn groups, and find other ways to make connections in the social impact space.
