We are looking for a full-time (35-hours per week) Climate Communications Specialist who understands the urgency of climate change and the energy transition (science, policy, and justice dimensions), and can think creatively to translate that knowledge into high-impact digital literacy resources, social media strategies, and multimedia content that moves people to act.

You’ll create and execute Student Energy’s communications strategy, which includes developing and curating social media campaigns, producing graphic design and video content, leading digital marketing efforts, and shaping how Student Energy shows up publicly, by building media relationships and amplifying the stories of young people driving systems change. For the right candidate, this position could develop into a more senior management role.

Projects and responsibilities

Actively tracking important news, trends, language, and content related to energy, youth, the green economy, and environmental issues in Canada and globally, to synthesize informed, relevant insights to Student Energy leadership and communications team
Leading strategies for digital content and track success metrics and insights. This includes analyzing monthly social media and website analytics, collecting regular feedback from our audience, and preparing recommendations for the wider team on what works and doesn’t work.
Actively seeking out aligned storytelling and media opportunities to raise the profile of young people taking action on energy, and amplify the role of youth in systems change
Ensuring that all external communications materials, the Student Energy website, and social media platforms are up to date with current branding and messaging through regular reviews and content creation support.
Reviewing and approving content for the Quarterly Newsletter, press releases, and announcements
Providing clear creative direction and feedback to graphic design and social media contributors, ensuring output meets both brand standards and the accuracy that the subject matter requires
Developing Public Relations and Media Relations strategy, and creating a database of media contacts
Researching and engaging regularly with Student Energy’s digital audience, understanding trends, and pivoting social media campaigns as necessary.
Developing an understanding of targeted ads, digital marketing, and SEO, with the aim of enabling Student Energy to reach a more diverse global audience of young people to apply for programs
Communicating new initiatives, changes in messaging, new communications assets, and other important updates to the wider Student Energy team.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

2+ years of experience working as part of a Communications team, and demonstrated experience in some, or all, of the following areas: social media content creation, media relations, internal communications, email outreach, executing communications campaigns, growing digital following, web development and support, proofreading, video editing or directing.
Editorial experience (assignment, copy, web content, etc.)
An existing understanding and/or a strong curiosity to learn about climate science, clean energy, and climate policy, including familiarity with the key debates and discourse around just transition and youth advocacy.
Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills, including an ability to effectively translate complex issues or technical content into accessible but powerful narratives and messages that resonate.
Self-starter, with an ability to work independently, a desire to actively solve problems, and an interest in managing a small team

Assets

Research skills (literature review, synthesis, report writing)
Media relations experience: working for media, getting earned media placed and/or responding to media requests.
Graphic design skills and advanced understanding of graphic design and video editing software
Website management and understanding of web architecture
Experience in a climate, energy, environment, or related context, whether in a non-profit, corporate, community, advocacy, or government role and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders and partners.

Annual salary range for this position is $53,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience.

Term: The contract term is for one-year beginning July 15, 2026, with the possibility of extension for the right candidate.

Work Location: This position is fully remote for candidates based in Canada.
