Since its founding, Project Shema has supported institutions across the country to address contemporary antisemitism, with an emphasis on how anti-Jewish ideas can emerge in progressive spaces and in discourse around Israel and Palestine. Founded by Jewish leaders with deep ties in social justice movements, Project Shema brings a fresh approach to these challenging issues.

The Vice President of Communications will shape and elevate Project Shema’s external voice, brand, and messaging strategy. This leader will drive a wide-reaching communications approach that engages diverse audiences and strengthens stakeholder relationships through listening and bridge-building. The Vice President of Communications will oversee all external communications, brand messaging, media relations, and crisis response, ensuring a clear and consistent voice aligned with the organization’s values, while partnering internally to support content, products, and external-facing teams.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop, build, and lead a comprehensive communications strategy that elevates the organization’s mission, and drives consistent and clear messaging to diverse audiences.

- Define and strengthen Project Shema’s brand identity, ensuring cohesive visual design, narrative framing, and storytelling across all platforms.

- Oversee the creation of high-impact messaging across multiple platforms (i.e. press releases, reports, newsletters, website content, and video) while ensuring tone and language reflect the organization’s values.

- Collaborate across teams drive consistent communication that supports development goals; oversee staff and lead partners as needed.

- Work with the Vice President of Data and Impact to define a Monitoring & Evaluation Plan that tracks and assesses communication metrics and leverages these insights to inform strategy.

- Work with senior leadership to drive rapid-response communications during moments of heightened antisemitic incidents, political tension, or public scrutiny. Craft measured, principled responses that reflect both moral clarity and strategic awareness.

- Increase visibility by amplifying leaders’ voices, shaping messaging, and building media relationships.

Qualifications & Skills

- 7+ years experience in communications, PR, media strategy, or related fields; 3+ years in a leadership role.

- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to communicate complex issues to varied audiences.

- Proven ability to inspire and guide cross-team collaboration while establishing a sustainable communications infrastructure.

- Experience managing media relations and acting as a spokesperson or supporting leaders in that role.

- Strategic thinking and rapid response skills.

- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communications campaigns.

- Experience navigating dialogues across difference in ways that foster collaboration and change.

- Interest in issues related to antisemitism, Jewish identity, Israel and Palestine discourse, and progressive politics.

- Passion for the mission of building a more just and inclusive society.

- Track record of building and executing various initiatives.

- Experience in shaping communications functions with an entrepreneurial mindset.
