About Fish On
Fish On is a new, values-driven organization amplifying the voices of conservation-minded anglers, spearfishers and ocean enthusiasts. We’re building a movement that connects fishing, community and conservation — advocating for a healthy ocean and equitable access to coastal spaces. Fish On operates as a project of Earth Island Institute.
For over 30 years, Earth Island Institute has been a hub for grassroots campaigns dedicated to conserving, preserving, and restoring the ecosystems on which our civilization depends. By serving as a support system for creative individuals, Earth Island is helping to grow the environmental movement. Their sponsored projects address many of the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues and work toward a sustainable future through a combination of education and activism — informing decision-makers, the media, and the general public about global threats and opportunities.
We’re looking for our first full-time Communications Manager to help grow Fish On’s brand, expand our reach and deepen our impact. This is an exciting opportunity for an early- to mid-career communications professional who’s ready to shape strategy, get creative and grow along with a mission-driven organization.
About the Role
The Communications Manager will lead Fish On’s digital and media presence—crafting compelling stories, developing campaigns, and ensuring our communications reflect our values and voice. You’ll manage our website, email communications, social media, and issue-specific campaigns, while also supporting donor and partner communications. We’re a small but growing team so you’ll have a lot of ownership and creative freedom and your work will have a direct, visible impact on the future of Fish On.
Key Responsibilities
● Digital Strategy & Execution: Develop and manage Fish On’s overall digital communications strategy across web, social, and email platforms.
● Content Creation: Plan, write, and design engaging content (posts, graphics, videos, newsletters) that builds community and drives action.
● Campaigns: Lead digital advocacy and awareness campaigns tied to key fishery and ocean issues.
● Brand Management: Ensure consistency in tone, visuals, and messaging across all platforms.
● Fundraising Support: Work with Fish On’s Executive Director to support donor communications, craft fundraising appeals, and share impact stories.
● Analytics & Learning: Track engagement metrics, learn what works, and adapt strategies to grow our reach and influence.
You’ll Thrive in This Role If You…
● Are an excellent writer and storyteller who can translate complex issues into compelling, accessible, yet scientifically-accurate, messages.
● Have experience managing social media accounts and/or digital campaigns for a mission-driven organization, brand or cause.
● Are organized, creative and comfortable wearing multiple hats.
● Are excited by the chance to help shape an emerging brand from the ground up.
● Have a personal connection to fishing, the ocean or outdoor recreation.
Qualifications
● 3–6 years of experience in communications, marketing and/or digital media.
● Strong written and visual communication skills.
● Proficiency with social media management, email platforms (e.g., Mailchimp), and basic web content management (Squarespace or similar).
● Familiarity with design or content tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe).
● A marine / fishery science background is a plus, but not required for this role.
Perks and Compensation
● Full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $75,000 - $85,000 depending on experience.
● Benefits include medical, vision and dental.
● Paid leave, in addition to 13 observed holidays and winter holiday week.
● Flexible schedule and fully remote work environment, California-based.
● Supportive, creative team culture that values learning and growth.
● Fishing/ocean time: Every team member is encouraged to take 1–2 hours of their work week outdoors—whether that’s fishing, surfing, diving, or just spending time by the water.
