Job Description

The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) is seeking a Director of Communications. This critical role leads all of our internal and external communications efforts in collaboration with a range of stakeholders to enhance and amplify our organization’s voice and tell our stories in compelling ways that advance our strategic vision.

Founded over 55 years ago, ICCR is a pioneer coalition of over 300 institutional investor members who leverage their investments as a catalyst for social and environmental change. ICCR members collaborate to engage the world's most powerful corporations on a range of issues impacting communities in the U.S. and globally, including human rights and worker justice, climate change, health equity, and corporate political influence. In 2018, ICCR founded the Investor Alliance for Human Rights, an initiative designed to build the capacity of investors to engage corporations on business and human rights themes. Responsibilities

The Director of Communications is responsible for the oversight of all messaging for the organization across its multiple communications channels to ensure accuracy and consistency of messaging and is the guardian of the organization’s brand/image. The Director of Communication ensures that the organization’s public reputation and the integrity of its mission remains unassailable, and is the chief storyteller of the impact of the work of ICCR members. The Director of Communications also oversees internal and external communications, as well as communications strategies, for ICCR’s program areas and the Investor Alliance for Human Rights and understands their different voices and audiences. Specifically, the Director of Communications supervises the Associate Director of Communications and works with them to:

Write or oversee the development and distribution of key ICCR communications, including organizational statements, press releases, additional strategic institutional communications, and marketing materials.
Develop or collaborate on communications strategies and plans in support of priority programs and organizational strategies.
Develop and manage relationships with the press to advance organizational goals.
Develop and distribute public-facing materials, which tell the rich story of our members’ advocacy to build awareness of our work, demonstrate impact (both of ICCR and of our field), drive donations, and recruit new members.
Oversee member communications that foster coalition-building and information-sharing among members, build members’ capacity in shareholder engagement, and provide relevant legal/regulatory updates on the field of sustainable investing.
Oversee the management of the websites, social media channels, and eblast tools for both ICCR and the Investor Alliance

About you

You are a seasoned and confident communications professional with a strong dedication to integrity, equity, and social justice, and a passion for ICCR’s mission to advocate for corporate accountability regarding the policies and practices that harm vulnerable communities and the planet. You are a strong writer, able to communicate ICCR’s message to press, especially financial press, and diverse stakeholders. You are comfortable collaborating with, building consensus among, and reporting to a diverse set of stakeholders with differing viewpoints, and seek to include multiple perspectives and voices when drafting stories that will inspire a range of audiences and invite them into our collective efforts. You can quickly learn about complex topics, discern the most critical information, and distill it into compelling stories and arguments, as well as discern timely opportunities for amplifying our message. You have experience in supervising and mentoring direct reports, helping them manage their work and grow professionally.

Specifically, you will have many of the following qualifications:

A proven track record in a senior communications role for a nonprofit advocacy organization. Experience in rapid-response and crisis communications is considered a plus, along with experience in maintaining momentum on long-term campaigns and in developing and executing organizational communications strategies.
Strong, nuanced writing and storytelling skills, proofing and editing skills, and a facility with distilling complex concepts into clear and compelling statements.
Extensive experience developing press campaigns for social justice movements and strong experience nurturing relationships with the press. Relationships with journalists covering responsible investing are considered a plus.
Ability to manage a team independently and ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of projects.
Deep experience managing internal and external stakeholders effectively to execute in both rapid response and long-term campaign moments.

This position reports directly to the CEO and supervises the Associate Director of Communications

Job requirements

You must have the ability to work in the United States on East Coast time. Unfortunately, ICCR is unable to sponsor applicants for employment visas for this role.
This is a full-time position based in New York. The role is largely remote, with the NYC office available as needed. Candidates who live in the Northeast area are encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to local candidates. Regardless of location, all candidates must be able to travel to NYC for ICCR conferences and other in-person events.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary for this role is $100,000-$115,000 depending on experience. This role is full time and is part of ICCR’s union. It includes generous benefits, including 80% health insurance (individual or with dependents), 11% pension contribution after 3 months, paid dental/vision/life/short- and long-term disability insurance, remote work stipend, and extensive time off (including vacation, sick time, personal days, 13 paid holidays, and organizational time off around July 4th and end of year). Professional development will be provided as appropriate.
