Job Description
The Bookkeeper is responsible for maintaining our day-to-day financial records. This role is primarily transactional and administrative, focused on ensuring smooth financial operations and supporting basic financial reporting. We are supported by an external finance team that provides senior-level financial planning and analysis and accounting support; the Bookkeeper will work closely with this team to ensure accurate, timely, and effective financial operations.
Key responsibilities include:
• Accounts payable: Review and process invoices. Make payments. Assign transactions to appropriate accounts and classes. Track payment status.
• Accounts receivable: Issue invoices and follow up as needed. Confirm receipt of payments. Reconcile payments to invoices. Maintain aging reports.
• Bank accounts: Review activity. Monitor balances. Track investments.
• Expenses: Review staff expenses for policy compliance. Process reimbursements.
• Payroll: Prepare payroll (semi-monthly) for review. Administer staff pension contributions.
• Reporting: Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting. Support grant tracking.
• Annual audit and tax filing: Gather documents and respond to questions in support of the annual audit and preparation of required tax forms (e.g., IRS Form 990).
Skills and Qualifications
Essential:
• At least two years of relevant professional experience as a bookkeeper or similar role.
• Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks).
• Strong attention to detail, particularly when handling confidential financial information.
• Ability to manage recurring tasks independently and meet deadlines.
• Strong written communication skills.
• Proficiency with standard software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Professional proficiency in English.
Preferable:
• Experience working in a nonprofit, particularly in a US 501(c)3.
• Experience working with payroll processing, particularly in a US context.
• Experience supporting external accountants, auditors, and finance teams.
• Interest in carbon markets and/or carbon crediting.
• Postsecondary credential (e.g., diploma or degree).
Working Conditions
This is a full-time, remote position. Full overlap with Pacific or Eastern Time business hours is required.
Applicants must maintain legal authorization to work in their jurisdiction of residence for the duration of their employment. Relocation to a different jurisdiction requires prior approval and is not guaranteed. We do not sponsor work visas or cover relocation expenses.
This position requires occasional travel (approximately two weeks per year) for events such as retreats or conferences.
Salary and Benefits
For positions based in the United States, the salary range is $60,503 to $77,655; new hires are typically placed between $60,503 and $69,079. For positions based outside the United States, compensation will be determined by local market conditions and internal equity.
This position offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions, paid vacation, other leaves, and a monthly stipend for phone and internet costs.
